Guided tissue regeneration membranes for periodontal regeneration--a literature review.

Guided tissue regeneration materials were reviewed in this paper and can be categorized as non-resorbable and bioabsorbable. Both materials have been used extensively in periodontal regeneration with no difference in the clinical outcome. Selection of barrier material depends on resorbability, size of the defect, morphology of the defect, operator preference and patient acceptance.

Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid): Applications and Future Prospects for Periodontal Tissue Regeneration

Periodontal tissue regeneration is the ultimate goal of the treatment for periodontitis-affected teeth. The success of regenerative modalities relies heavily on the utilization of appropriate biomaterials with specific properties. Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), a synthetic aliphatic polyester, has been actively investigated for periodontal therapy due to its favorable mechanical propert...

Fibrous membrane of nano-hybrid poly-L-lactic acid/silica xerogel for guided bone regeneration.

Nanofibrous membranes, consisting of a poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)-silica xerogel hybrid material, were successfully fabricated from a hybrid sol using the electrospinning technique for guided bone regeneration (GBR) application. These hybrid nanofibers exhibited a homogeneous and continuous morphology, with a nano-sized dispersed silica xerogel phase in the PLLA fiber matrix. The mechanical pro...

Guided tissue regeneration for periodontal infra-bony defects.

BACKGROUND Conventional treatment of destructive periodontal (gum) disease arrests the disease but does not usually regain the bone support or connective tissue lost in the disease process. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical procedure that specifically aims to regenerate the periodontal tissues when the disease is advanced and could overcome some of the limitations of conventional t...
